The
interdisciplinary major in Latin American studies is intended for students with
an interest in the Latin American region and its diaspora. It offers students a
range of course choices in a variety of fields in the arts and sciences. The
major consists of 30 credits, of which 15 credits must be at the 300 level or
above, completed with a grade of C or better. Students must take the core course,
Latin America: An Introduction (01:590:101). Required courses are: 3 credits in
history (Colonial Latin America 01:508:260, Modern Latin America 01:508:262,
Latin America and the United States 01:508:264, Brazil 01:508:360, Mexico
01:508:362, Gender in Latin America 01:508:369, or Cuba 01:508:370); 6
credits in social sciences (any two of the following: Anthropology of Latin
America 01:070:223, Geography of Latin America 01:450:336, Change in Latin
America 01:790:312; and Latinos and Migration 01:595:298 OR Latinos and
Community 01:595:299); 6 credits in Spanish-American or Brazilian literature
and culture or art history; and a Seminar in Latin American Studies (01:590:401
or 402). Students must also take 9 credits of elective courses with a Latin
American focus, 6 credits of which must be at the 300 level or above; electives
may include courses listed above not selected as required courses. Majors must
also satisfy the language proficiency requirement by completing either Spanish 01:940:215
or 01:940:261 (or above) OR Portuguese 01:810:201 or 01:810:203 (or above). Students are
encouraged to take a placement exam at the language lab to determine their
level of language ability. Course selections for the major must be approved by
the program director or an adviser.
