Graduation Requirements for the Major

A.  Major Requirements (54-55 credits)

The major in public health is offered by the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.  It involves a total of 7-8 credits in prerequisite courses that students must complete (with grades of C or better in each of them) prior to declaring the major, plus 10 additional required courses (36 credits), plus four public health elective courses (12 credits).

The prerequisite courses for the major are as follows:

10:762:101 or 10:832:101 Introduction to Planning, Policy, and Public Health (3)

10:762:205  Basic Statistical Methods for Policy, Planning, and Health (4) or a 200-level or higher statistics course (3-4)

The four other courses required of all students in the major are:

01:355:302  Scientific and Technical Writing (3) or  01:355:303  Writing for Business and the Professions (3) or 01:255:315  Writing Grant Proposals (3) or 10:832:339  Public Health Literature (3) or other preapproved writing course

  10:762:395  Research Methods (4)

  10:832:499  Internship with Seminar (6)

The four elective courses (at least three of which must be at the 300 level or above) must be either public health (subject code 832) courses, or preapproved public health electives. Students should contact the program director, Anton Nelessen (nelessen@rutgers.edu), for a current list of these preapproved electives.

For additional information about the major in public health, please refer to the Edward J. Bloustein School section of the catalog.

B.  Additional SEBS Core Requirements for Students Majoring in Public Health (30 credits)

SEBS majors in public health must complete additional course requirements associated with the SEBS core. This involves a maximum total of 32 additional credits; however, with appropriate selection of courses in Areas IV and VIII below, a total of 9 of these 32 SEBS core requirement credits may also be used toward the fulfillment of the requirements of the major (item A above). Students are strongly urged to consult both with their academic adviser and with an assistant dean at SEBS for guidance in developing a plan of coursework.

I. School Mission: Interdisciplinary Critical Analysis (3 credits)

One 3-credit Junior/Senior Colloquium (See the SEBS Degree Requirements chapter for a description of this requirement.)

II. Introductory Life and Physical Sciences

This requirement is automatically fulfilled by the prerequisite courses to the major (see item A above).

III. Humanities and the Arts (6 credits)

See suggested courses in the SEBS Degree Requirements chapter.

IV. Multicultural and International Studies (6 credits)

See suggested courses in the SEBS Degree Requirements chapter. Students should note that this SEBS requirement could be fulfilled with any two of the following courses that could also be used in fulfillment of the requirements for the public health major:

10:832:414  Culture and Health (3)
10:832:462  Human Rights and Health (3)
10:832:476  Immigration Policy and Health (3)
11:374:341  Social and Ecological Aspects of Health and Disease (3)

V. Human Behavior, Economic Systems, and Political Processes (9 credits)

A. Human Behavior (3 credits)

See suggested courses in the SEBS Degree Requirements chapter.

B.Economic Systems (3 credits)

See suggested courses in the SEBS Degree Requirements chapter. Students should consult with their academic adviser before selecting an economics course, because the appropriate course to take depends on whether the student is interested in environmental health, health policy, or health administration. With careful planning in consultation with an adviser, it may be possible for a student to meet this 3-credit SEBS requirement with an economics course that could also be used in fulfillment of the requirements for the public health major.

C. Political Processes (3 credits)

See suggested courses in the SEBS Degree Requirements chapter.

VI. Oral and Written Communication (3 credits)

  01:355:101  Expository Writing I (3)

Note: A second writing course is included in the requirements for the major (see item A above).

VII. Experience-Based Education

This requirement is automatically fulfilled by the required Internship with Seminar (10:832:499).

VIII. Professional Ethics in Public Health (3 credits)

01:730:249  Medical Ethics (3) or 10:832:356  Public Health Law and Ethics (3)

Students should note that the 10:832:356 course could also be used toward the fulfillment of the major requirements (see item A above).

IX. Unspecified Electives (43-53 credits)

In addition to courses meeting the above requirements, students can take any other courses offered by the university, for which they meet the course eligibility requirements, to bring their total number of credits to the minimum of 128 required for graduation.
