Students who wish to apply for admission to any one of the three SCILS majors must:
1) Have completed Expository Writing or an equivalent course with a grade of C or better, or an Advanced Placement score of 4 or better;
2) Have completed at least 15 credits at Rutgers, or at least 15 transfer credits to Rutgers, with at least a 2.0 grade-point average and;
3) Have completed with a grade of C or better, or be currently enrolled in, the required course for the major of choice.
For Communication Major applicants, the required prerequisite survey course is:

For Journalism and Media Studies Major applicants, the required prerequisite survey course is:

For
Information Technology and Informatics Major
applicants, the required prerequisite survey course is:

Students who apply and are admitted to a SCILS major while enrolled in the prerequisite survey course of their major must earn a grade of C or better in the course to remain in the major after the end of the semester. Students who earn a D or F in the prerequisite survey course will be allowed to retake the course one time. Students who earn a D or F in the prerequisite survey course, and who were admitted to the major and preregistered for the following semester, will be deregistered from courses that list that survey course as a prerequisite.
Application Process
SCILS will accept applications to the major during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Deadlines for submitting an application are published on the SCILS website and allow for decisions to be announced in time for students to preregister for the following semester. Applications submitted after the deadlines will be held until the following semester.

Students who do not apply to the major during the semester they are enrolled in the prerequisite survey course may continue to take some courses towards the major. Students planning to major in communication may take 04:192:200,201, and 300 after completion of 04:189:101 before being admitted to the major. Students planning to major in information technology and informatics may take 04:547:200 and 220 after completion of 04:189:103 before being admitted to the major. Students planning to major in journalism and media studies may take 04:567:324, 334, 335, 350, and 379 after completion of 04:189:102 before being admitted to the major. Completion of any of these courses does not guarantee admission to any major.
Students are not permitted to double major in two SCILS majors. There are no minors offered in any of SCILS undergraduate programs at the time of publication of this catalog. Instructions and application forms for all programs are available on the SCILS website: http://www.scils.rutgers.edu .
