04:547:200Social Informatics (3) Analysis of the social, cultural, philosophical, ethical, legal, public policy, and economic issues relating to information technologies. Explores the interaction of technological developments with social, economic, and class issues. Students participate in collaborative teamwork. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:201Programming for ITI Majors I (3) Introduction to programming languages used in Internet development. Special emphasis placed on using JAVA to develop web-based technologies. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:202Programming for ITI Majors II (3) Building on concepts introduced in Programming for ITI Majors I, this course provides students with in-depth exposure to XML, data structures, and data acquisition languages. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:201. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:210Management of Technological Organizations (3) Presents fundamental concepts of management and organizational theory applied to the technological marketplace and organizational settings. Focuses on project management with emphasis on decision support systems and management information systems in corporate environments. Considers information as an organizational resource and how information systems support corporate and organizational goals. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:220Retrieving and Evaluating Electronic Information (3) Examination and analysis of electronic information to evaluate communication processes, content viability, aesthetic and technical factors, and the quality of information structures. Includes the exploration of information retrieval, information-seeking behaviors, and user perspectives and preferences in meeting information needs. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103. Pre- or corequisite: 04:189:200. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:230Human-Computer Interaction (3) The relationship between computer system and/or interface design and human and/or organizational information needs studied. Emphasis is placed on the importance of iterative design strategies, communication between and among designers and users, and usability testing methods. Students analyze and test various systems using current theoretical constructs. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103. Pre- or corequisite: 04:547:200. 04:547:300Application of Research in Information Technology (3) An introduction to systematic inquiry in information technology and informatics using quantitative and qualitative approaches with an emphasis on individual and organizational users of information in a digital environment. Includes the analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and reporting of applied and theoretical research in the information technology field. Computer laboratory sessions are used to facilitate statistical, textual, and graphical analyses of data. Methodologies of research in information technology are critically evaluated. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:220. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:310Leadership in Electronic Environments (3) Focuses on leadership theory with attention to the applicability of a chaos framework to electronic environments. Emphasis is on cultural concerns and the importance of diversity in ensuring competitiveness in the increasingly diverse marketplace. Addresses global information infrastructures, the concepts of leadership and diversity as defined and applied internationally and in multinational organizations and marketplaces, including international partnerships, clients, and customers. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:210. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:320Web Design (3) Focuses on establishing linkages between specific content and client needs in a web-based environment. Topics include web design using current W3C standards, web site access and usability, and developing web site content tailored to specific audiences. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:201, 04:547:202. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:321Information Visualization (3) Use of different perspectives, media, and their interrelationships to present information on a unified topic using text, graphics, images, and sounds. Comparisons of different viewpoints to visualize how clients might interpret, navigate, and interact with displays using multiple media. Effective display and presentation of information in organizational contexts, using various formats, both print and electronic. Class lectures/discussions augmented by computer laboratory exercises. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:201, 04:547:202. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:330Database Technologies (3) Introduction to basic database design principles and the use of database technologies for the organization and management of large information systems. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:300. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:331Networking and Internet Technologies (3) Overview of network technologies and architectures, telecommunication networks, computer architectures, and multifunction networks. Specific examination of Intranet and Internet technologies. Emphasis on network topology, deployment scenarios, and proper technologies for different needs, the impact of internetworking on business communication solutions, and enterprise network planning and management.  Topics discussed include multiple access protocols; network layer and routing algorithms; transport layer; flow, error and congestion control; TCP/IP protocols; naming protocols discovery; physical transmission; Internet application protocols: SMTP, HTTP, DNS, SNMP; and emerging network technologies. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:201, 04:547:202. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:340Gender and Technology   Analysis of the effects of gender on the development and use of information technologies and of gender-based electronic information preferences. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103. Pre- or corequisite: 04:547:200. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:400Information Policies, Politics, and Power (3) Synthesis of concerns and conflicts related to information access and dissemination, freedom of information, copyright, intellectual property rights and responsibilities, privacy, filtering, firewalls, encryption, and other forms of information security and computer crime. Legal and ethical issues are considered. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:200. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:410Electronic Commerce (3) Examines the technologies used to transact business electronically; the social, economic, and security issues related to such transactions; and the design of web sites that facilitate these transactions. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:201, 04:547:310. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:420Economics of Information Technologies   Examines economic theories related to information technologies and systems. The concept of information as "commodity" is considered. Quantitative methods such as cost-benefit analysis and return on information technology investment evaluation is introduced. Alternative methods such as measuring the human costs associated with information technology implementations is addressed. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:310. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:430Designing and Managing Digital Environments (3) Introduction to basic design and management of digital records and archives based on standards, best practices, and experiential learning. Analysis of digital resources, issues and problems in large electronic text, image, and multimedia collections. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:330. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:440Information Technology and Learning   Using information technology for the design and development of instructional systems and materials for basic education and continuing staff development. Considerations of various forms of representation of knowledge, problem solving, and assessment of the usability of information systems in the workplace. Prerequisites: 04:189:101 or 102 and 04:189:103, 04: 547:410. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:450ITI Internship (3) Supervised internships for ITI majors. Students negotiate course requirements with the course coordinator and the supervisor in the field to gain professional work experience in a corporate, research, or educational setting, using knowledge/competencies acquired in the information technology and informatics course work. A problem-based approach to technology integration focusing on real-life problems in a specific organizational environment. Prerequisites: Substantial course work in the ITI major. Prior approval of proposed project by instructor and the director of the ITI program, with a filed approval form before registration. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
04:547:460Independent Study (3) Independent study on a topic selected by the student and approved by a supervising faculty member and the director of the ITI program. Study includes both independent readings and research related to a topic of special interest to the student. Prerequisites:  Substantial course work in the ITI major. Prior approval of proposed project by instructor and the director of the ITI program, with a filed approval form before registration. Open only to ITI majors accepted to SCILS.
