The Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI) is sponsored jointly by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The institute houses a select group of scientists, physicians, educators, and policy researchers who focus on the serious health effects of environmental pollutants. Institute members investigate ways in which people are exposed to chemicals, study how chemicals react in the body, educate the public about risks from chemical exposure, and help formulate policies to protect human health. EOHSI is comprised of six divisions: toxicology, public education and risk communication, occupational health, exposure measurement and assessment, environmental health, and environmental policy. In 1988, EOHSI became the site of the first National Institutes of Health (NIH) center of excellence in New Jersey, one of only 20 such centers funded by the NIH to facilitate multidisciplinary research on health problems posed by environmental exposures.
