Graduate Programs in Music

Degree Programs: Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts, Artist Diploma

Director, Department of Music: Steven Kemper, Ph.D.

Graduate Adviser: Robert Grohman, D.M.A.

The Department of Music at the Mason Gross School of the Arts offers advanced training in performance and music education leading to the master of music (M.M.) degree, the doctor of musical arts (D.M.A.) degree, or to the artist diploma (A.D.). These programs have as their common aim the development of highly educated professional musicians who excel in their major areas of study. All three programs also strive to give participants a deep historical and theoretical understanding of all aspects of music and a firm grasp of the most recent developments in the field.

Those who choose to pursue advanced training at the Mason Gross School of the Arts Department of Music enjoy the advantages of a distinguished performance and music education faculty. In addition, they receive the benefits of an equally prominent faculty in musicology, music theory, and composition through course offerings at Rutgers School of Graduate Studies. The diverse faculty resources available offer a breadth of experience that students rarely encounter in other programs and institutions.

A special feature of the graduate programs is the Rutgers Concert Bureau, which arranges concert opportunities for enrolled graduate students.
