08:966:549-550 Directing II: The Playwright's Voice (3,3) Work in more complex and innovative forms that build on the skills and theories taught in 08:966:519-520  Directing I. Through research, discussion, and videos, the student is taught to identify and interpret the voice of the playwright. Short plays by playwrights with widely different styles--such as Shanley, Mamet, Pinter, and Williams--are directed for class. To learn the basics of fabric dyeing including color matching, ombre, shibori, resist-dyeing; fabric painting and distressing using union dyes, fiber specific dyes, and fabric paint. Safety issues and concerns will also be addressed.

In this course, students will obtain a basic knowledge of pattern drafting based on draping to an individual, starting with the dress form and fitting it to a specific body. We will use draping techniques to learn pattern manipulation for garments post-1920s.

The objective of this course is to focus on the fit of clothing and costumes to individuals. Students will learn how to identify fit issues in a fitting setting and how to correct the pattern. Bias construction, flat-patterning, working with stretch, and direction-giving will be explored.

Explores the theories, practices, and the ideas behind the art of theater and theatrical performance in the 21st century, with an emphasis on historical perspectives and contemporary applications. Course builds on concepts and skills learned in script analysis and applies them to close reads of two dramatic works and an intensive reading of two others. How does the actor get the most out of the first readings of a play? How do different works demand different or similar approaches? Explores human history through the lens of fashion using a multidisciplinary approach for each period and drawing on art history, anthropology, psychology, economic and political history, as well as sociology to understand the major arcs of fashion and how they reflect the cultural consciousness of their time.

Throughout the semester students learn hand and machine sewing, focusing on techniques used to stitch historical and modern costumes. Students see classic and contemporary performances and visit cultural and artistic landmarks throughout England.

Students will obtain a basic knowledge of Shakespeare's plays contextualizing the writing by exploring texts written and/or published in the reign of Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603) and in the reign of King James I (1603-1625). The course will also cover initial breakdown and understanding of Shakespeare's plays--verse, rhyming verse, and prose.

08:966:709-710 Acting in London (12,12) Students will obtain training specific to the study of classical acting. The course will cover traditional British drama study in performing classical and Shakespearean texts in the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. Students will participate in a rigorous weekly conservatoire schedule consisting of five main components: acting, voice and speech, movement, stage combat, and historical dance.

08:966:711 Design in London (12) Students will obtain training specific to the study of design techniques of Britain and history of British design. The course will cover design, life drawing, model making, project development, and presentation skills. Students will participate in demanding weekly classes as well as site-specific study, working side by side with leading professional London directors.
