The program of
study leading to the master of music degree in music education is designed for
practicing music teachers who possess a teaching certificate and have at least
one year of full-time K-12 music teaching experience. Required
Course of Study (a total of 36 credits, which are distributed as follows): 1. Four courses
(12 credits) in music education:

credits) in music theory, to be selected with the director's approval.

credits) in music history, to be selected with the director's approval.
4. 6 credits of
performance study (lessons=2 credits, ensemble=1 credit).
5. 6 credits of
electives acceptable for graduate credit in either music, music education,
and/or education.
*The master's of music degree in music education online program offers online elective courses
permissible pending adviser approval.
In addition, every
student must take a comprehensive written examination in music education.
Procedures are similar to those described for the master of music in
performance, conducting, or collaborative piano. An oral comprehensive exam is
administered after a successful completion of the written exam.
Students in music
education are not guaranteed lessons but may take them if space is available.
