Program in Playwriting

This is a three-year full-time program requiring a minimum of 69 credits. Students work under close supervision of the graduate program director. In addition to required courses in playwriting, screenwriting, television writing, dramatic literature, criticism, script analysis, and related subjects, all students must complete at least one literary management internship at a professional theater. The program emphasizes the craft of theater writing and the collaborative process of bringing a script to the stage. As student material reaches an appropriate level of development, the faculty supplements individual and class instruction with script readings, workshops, and annual one-act productions. With the approval of the department's executive committee and the head of the playwriting program the student's studies culminate with the production of a full-length play.
