The Ed.M. in education, culture, and society is a 30-credit master's degree program. The program provides students with an opportunity for advanced study and research in education from the perspectives provided by the social sciences and humanities. Students can choose to focus their studies in Race and Ethnicity, Global Education, Higher Education, or Queer and Gender Studies.

Students will:

  1. develop perspectives critical to understanding education as a social process situated in political, historical, social, economic, and cultural contexts;
  2. understand issues of social justice and equity in educative settings, informed by theory and research; and
  3. develop global and multicultural competencies.

1. All students will be required to take Education and Society, History of American Education.

2. Students will take at least 9 credits of other Education, Culture, and Society (15:310:xxx) electives.

3. Students will be required to take 6 credits of elective courses outside of Education, Culture, and Society selected in consultation with your adviser in order to supplement chosen focus.

4. The remaining 6 credits can be Education, Culture, and Society or electives to reach the 30 required credits in consultation with your adviser.

*Students have the option of completing a master's thesis by enrolling in 15:310:599 Master Thesis Research, but this is not a requirement.
**Students can take any selection of Education, Culture, and Society courses here in consultation with their adviser or they can choose to focus in a particular specialization.
