The program in social and philosophical foundations of education provides students with an opportunity for advanced study and research in education from the perspectives provided by the social science and humanities disciplines. The program prepares individuals for conducting research, teaching at the postsecondary level, and assuming leadership positions in public and higher education and other organizations.
Those working toward the master of education degree will take a general program, including work in several of the areas below:

social and cultural studies in education (i.e., sociology, anthropology, economics, and comparative education)

humanities and education (i.e., history, philosophy, African-American studies, and contemporary issues in education)
Degree Requirements:
1. Social and Philosophical Foundations (18 credits)
Minimum of 6 credits in humanities and education
Minimum of 6 credits in social and cultural studies in education
6 credits in other program areas
2. Electives outside program (6 credits)
3. Additional electives (6 credits)
Social and philosophical foundations and/or other appropriate university departments with the approval of a faculty adviser.
