To complete the master of education (Ed.M.) degree in social studies education, students must take a minimum of 30 credits in social studies, general education, and fields appropriate to social studies content. They must also submit and defend a master's portfolio. Course of study, including choices of electives and possible independent study, must be made with adviser approval.

This program does not include coursework leading to New Jersey teacher certification in social studies. 

Required Courses (12 credits)

Students must take the following:

15:255:538  Teacher as Researcher, or Independent Study equivalent (3)

15:257:560  Introduction to Social Studies Education (3)

15:257:561  Analysis of Social Studies Curricula (3)

Students must also take one social studies course (257), which can include:

15:257:566  Liberty Versus Equality in Education (3)

15:257:568  Topics in Social Studies Education (3)

15:257:569  Making Citizens: Civic Identity, Learning, and Action (3)

Electives (18 credits)

Students must take six graduate elective courses as follows:

At least two courses (6 credits) within the Graduate School of Education (GSE)

At least two courses (6 credits) outside the GSE in fields related to social studies content.

These can be upper-level undergraduate courses if taken for graduate credit. These content areas typically include, but are not limited to: Africana studies, anthropology, American studies, Latino and Hispanic Caribbean studies, economics, geography, history, political science, and sociology, and two additional courses (6 credits) in any of the above categories, for a total of six elective courses.

Master's Portfolio

At the end of their final year, all students will be required to submit and defend a portfolio. Students should consult with their advisers on dates and regulations regarding the portfolio, which is described in detail elsewhere. Portfolios are graded pass/no credit, and students must receive a passing evaluation to complete the social studies Ed.M. requirements.
