Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology 2009-2011 Academic Programs Sport Psychology Concentration Definition, Nature, and Scope

Definition, Nature, and Scope

Within the context of the sport psychology concentration, the discipline of sport psychology reflects two separate, yet related dimensions: (1) systematic empirical inquiry about the psychology of sport, particularly the psychology of sport performance; and (2) application of psychology, within a professional practice framework, in order to enhance the development and performance of athletes, coaches, teams, and sport organizations.

The sport psychology concentration at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) is available to a range of individuals who express an interest in sport psychology, as defined above. These include: (a) students in any of the GSAPP programs; (b) Ph.D. clinical psychology students; (c) graduate students in other units of the university; and (d) qualified individuals at the postdoctoral level including psychologists and other health care providers.

Individuals, such as those noted above, who wish to concentrate part of their predoctoral study in the area of sport psychology, or those who want to undertake postdoctoral training in the area, may do so only within the context of the sport psychology concentration and only with approval of its director, Dr. Charles Maher. Individuals interested in participation in the sport psychology concentration are encouraged to email Dr. Maher at camaher@rci.rutgers.edu; or phone him at 732-445-2000, ext. 103.

The sport psychology concentration has been in operation at GSAPP since 2003, under the direction of its founder, Dr. Maher of the Department of Applied Psychology, who is a professor of psychology at GSAPP. He is also a licensed psychologist and a sport psychologist with more than 20 years of experience working with athletes, teams, coaches, sport organizations, and other entities at professional and collegiate levels.
