Change or Registration and Withdrawal

After the second week of classes, the only routinely permissible changes of registration are withdrawals from individual courses or withdrawal from all courses, both of which are allowed without academic penalty until the end of the eighth week. The date on which the graduate registrar receives from the student written notification of withdrawal governs the academic and financial consequences of the withdrawal. Students withdrawing from a course after the eighth week need the approval of the dean's office, as evidenced by the signature of the dean (or the dean's designated representative) on the withdrawal form, and are required to provide a letter from the instructor indicating academic status in the course and are subject to receiving a failing grade at the discretion of the instructor. A student who stops attending a course without notifying the registrar will receive a grade of F in that course. No refunds of tuition are given in the case of individual course withdrawals after the second week of classes, although a student who withdraws from all courses may receive a partial refund (visit http://studentaid.rutgers.edu for more information). Withdrawal is not permitted after the 12th week of the semester.

Notification to the instructor, adviser, or school does not fulfill the student's obligation to communicate directly and in writing with the registrar in all matters pertaining to changes in registration and withdrawal.
