The Institute for Effective Education serves as a center for the advancement of research on effective educational strategies and programs for advancing best practices. The institute houses an undergraduate certificate program that coordinates coursework and field experiences leading to a New Jersey Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing. Certification programs are available in preschool through grade 3 (P-3), elementary education (K-5), middle school (6-8), subject matter fields (K-12), and Teachers of Students with Disabilities (P-12). It is important to note that the middle school and Teachers of Students with Disabilities licenses cannot stand alone--their requirements must be completed in addition to a P-3, K-5, or K-12 licensure program.

Elementary and P-3 certification candidates must show the completion of 60 credits in the liberal arts. Secondary subject certification candidates must also show the completion of 30 credits in an appropriate liberal arts concentration, with 12 of the 30 credits at or above the 300 level. 

Subject matter certification (K-12) is offered in art, biological sciences, chemistry, English, French, German, mathematics, music, physics, physical science, social studies, Spanish, speech arts and dramatics, and theater. 

Middle school certification (6-8) is offered in English, foreign languages, math, science, and social studies.                                                                                                         

Important Notes

1. All undergraduate certification candidates must choose and complete an academic major (NOT education) in addition to the certification requirements.

2. Periodic adjustments to the certification programs will likely occur over time. It is the responsibility of all students in the program to keep informed of program modifications on a regular basis by visiting the office and the website.

3. While some required courses are offered during the late afternoon and evening, most courses leading to certification can only be completed through daytime attendance.

4. Students should note that some courses are offered only during the Summer or Winter Sessions and should plan accordingly.
