25:705:447 Community and Public Health Nursing (4) Provides R.N. students with an introduction to community health nursing practice, including the standards of practice for community health nursing, with an emphasis on community assessment, prevention, program planning and evaluation, community empowerment, and caring for high-risk aggregates and vulnerable populations. Students will learn the theoretical basis underlying analysis of health patterns of communities and develop an understanding of the role of the professional nurse in promoting the health of communities.

25:705:448 Community Health Promotion (3) R.N. students apply community and public health nursing theory including standards of practice for community health nursing, with an emphasis on community assessment, prevention, program planning, and evaluation, community empowerment, and caring for highly and vulnerable populations. Students use the theoretical basis underlying analysis of health patterns of communities and develop an understanding of the role of the professional nurse in promoting the health of communities. The clinical reasoning process is used to provide care to individuals, families, groups, and communities.

25:705:449 Professional Role Development (4) One of three courses that constitute the first experiences in the nursing major for matriculated R.N. students completing the baccalaureate degree. This course is intended to serve as the bridge between theory and practice, and in the case of the R.N. student, capitalizes on preexisting knowledge and experience. The student is expected to establish a philosophical and scientific orientation to nursing through refinement of the affective and cognitive qualities that are basic to professional practice. Students are supported as they learn the dynamics of creative and critical thinking and evidence-based practice, applying these processes to both past and present situations. Supplementary case materials may also be used. Although the focus of course sessions will vary according to the background of the participants, special attention will be given to community based experiences and populations. This course assumes the best qualities of the adult learner: self-direction, prior experience, practicality, and motivation to learn whatever is necessary to succeed. Computer skills will be emphasized and expected throughout the course.

25:705:497 Leadership and Management in Nursing (4) Focuses on the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed by professional nurses to provide and manage patient care within health care systems. Emphasis is placed on the nurse's role as a leader and member of interdisciplinary teams who work together to provide safe and effective care to individuals, families, groups, and communities.

25:705:499 Leadership and Management Practicum (3) This clinical course continues to focus on the implementation of the care provider role with emphasis on the management and professional roles. Students synthesize their roles as professional nurses while providing nursing care to groups of clients, managing nursing systems, and implementing organizational change. Prerequisites: 25:705:306, 390, 449.
