The Department of Art & Design's facilities are in downtown New
Brunswick and on the Livingston campus in Piscataway. These two campuses house
studio classrooms, fabrication workshops, computer labs, seminar rooms, lecture halls, and the 4,000-square-foot
Mason Gross Galleries at Civic Square.
Most art and design classes meet in the Civic Square Building (CSB), in which there are
project spaces, critique rooms, a woodshop, and a lighting studio for students to photograph
artwork. CSB's
five Mac computer labs are equipped with workstations, scanners, and printers
tailored to the specific requirements of our specialized areas.
Additionally, the photography area has black and white darkrooms and large-scale digital printers, and the media area maintains audio and video recording and editing facilities with the latest software programs. There is also a dedicated room with a wall-sized green-screen for chromakeying photo and video. CSB also houses FORUM, a multi-purpose lecture, performance and critique space, and CHANNEL, a time-based media exhibition gallery.
The Livingston Arts
Building (LAB) houses the department's sculpture facilities, including workshops for
wood, metal, and ceramics. Individual studios, a gallery, and space for
students to work outdoors are also found at LAB.
Across the street from LAB, Art & Design students also have access to the Rutgers Makerspace workshop that includes 3D printers, digital plotters, laser-cutters, and other digital fabrication equipment.
Studio
spaces for M.F.A. students and some advanced B.F.A. undergraduates are available at
both CSB and LAB.
The spacious Mason
Gross Galleries in the Civic Square Building (4200 square-feet) present nine annual exhibitions by students,
alumni, faculty, and staff. All exhibits are free and open to
the public.
