01:574:103 Beginning Korean Reading and Writing for Heritage Students (3) Development of foundation in Korean grammar and vocabulary. Practice in reading, writing, and oral skills.

01:574:105,106 Online Elementary Korean (4,4) Acquisition of basic linguistic and cultural background of the Korean language. Intensive online course that is equivalent to Korean 101 and 102, respectively (01:574:101 and 102). Credit not given for both 01:574:101 and 01:574:105. 01:574:110 The History of the Korean Script and Calligraphy I (2) Examination of hangul, the indigenous morphophonemic writing system that was invented by King Sejong and his scholars in the 15th century. An overview of the history of hangul writing practices as well as an introduction to the principles, techniques, and art of Korean calligraphy. Practice in brush and pen writing in a variety of styles.
01:574:111 The History of the Korean Script and Calligraphy II (2) Continuation of 01:574:110. Further exploration of the history and characteristics of hangul. Practice in a variety of hangul writing styles in brush and pen writing. Understanding of Korean calligraphy in the context of the ink painting of sagunja ("four noble ones"). Introduction of a new genre of hangul calligraphy as an innovative modern transformation of a traditional art. Prerequisite: 01:574:110.

01:574:450 Korea in Translations: Modern Literature and Film (3) Translations as a generative process. Korean literary fiction and poetry of the 20th century and their versions in English translations. Film as another mode of translation with its own language and grammar. 01:574:471 Korea in Translations: Contemporary Media (3) Expository and journalistic writings with attention to contemporary language of the mass media. Broadcast news, documentary films, as well as newspaper and magazine articles, studied and translated into English. Prerequisite: 01:574:302 or equivalent.
01:574:495,496 Independent Study in Korean (3,3) Independent reading under supervision of a member of the department. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and department.
01:574:497,498 Honors in Korean (6,6) Individualized honors projects for students who have fulfilled all requirements for the minor in Korean or major in East Asian languages and area studies. Both semesters must be completed to receive credit.
