Dual J.D./M.S.W. Program

The School of Social Work, in partnership with the Rutgers Law School, offers an accelerated dual-degree program in law and social work, through which students may obtain dual juris doctor (J.D.) and master of social work (M.S.W.) degrees. The program is offered to students at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, Rutgers University-Newark, and Rutgers University-Camden.

Through the accelerated program, full-time students may expect to complete the requirements for the J.D. and M.S.W. degrees in four years rather than the five normally needed to complete both degrees separately. Students interested in the program need to apply for admission individually to the School of Social Work and to Rutgers Law School, and then need to satisfy admission requirements for the respective schools. To receive the dual degrees, participating students are required to meet the academic standards of both programs throughout their courses of study.

The dual-degree program is appropriate for students in both the social work management and policy and the clinical social work specializations.

The program offers two paths of study. In the first path, the student would begin the program at one of the law schools and complete the program at the School of Social Work. In the second path, the student would begin the program in the School of Social Work and complete the program at the law school.

For more information about the dual-degree program, contact the associate dean for student affairs at the School of Social Work.

The application deadline for the School of Social Work is February 1. Current first-year students also may apply for admission to the dual-degree program.
