Graduate Admission

Detailed application and deadline information are available on the School of Social Work website at http://socialwork.rutgers.edu. Individuals apply online by visiting the Office of Graduate and Professional Admissions website at http://gradstudy.rutgers.edu.

Requirements

In order to be considered for admission, applicants to the graduate School of Social Work must have completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited undergraduate institution. Applicants must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 out of 4.0, and applicants who do not have this minimum GPA should address this in their personal statement. Applicants must have a broad liberal arts academic background. Social work experience is not required but is advantageous.

A complete application consists of:

  • confidential disclosure document;
  • résumé;
  • three letters of recommendation;
  • personal statement;
  • official transcripts;
  • field evaluation (for advanced standing applicants only); and
  • application fee.

An introductory undergraduate course in statistics that covers descriptive and basic inferential statistical procedures is a prerequisite for the advanced part of the program but it is NOT a requirement for admission. Students must meet this requirement before they move to the advanced part of the program.

Admitted students are required to reserve a place in the entering class by submitting a nonrefundable deposit of $200.

To reapply within one year, a new application fee, updated personal statement, and one current reference must be submitted. After a lapse of one year or more, the entire application process must be repeated.
