Competencies



Competencies for the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) in Global Public Health (45 credits)

Each department identifies competencies for each degree offered. These competencies reflect the full range of knowledge, skills, and other attributes that a student will acquire as a result of completing the requirements for a particular degree.

Upon graduation, a student completing the M.P.H. curriculum in global public health will be able to:
  • evaluate determinants of global public health in a range of context based on the five major public health perspectives: systems and policies, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, and health education and behavioral science;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the economic, educational, political, sociocultural, environmental, ecological and biological conditions that represent obstacles to attaining global health;
  • demonstrate an understanding of international regulations, transfer of new pharmaceuticals into health systems, and management of global health programs;
  • analyze root causes of morbidity and mortality in major regions of the world and how they are affected by demographic, sociocultural, biological, occupational, and environmental factors;
  • apply fundamental principles of global standards for the protection of human subjects in diverse cultural settings;
  • apply the fundamental principles of global public health perspectives on global public health education, research, and practice; and
  • exhibit skill sets required for global health practice including written and verbal communication skills, capacity for interprofessional teamwork, leadership, social awareness, and cultural competency to enhance capacity strengthening and service delivery with compassion and integrity.
