URHA 0608 Leadership for the Nonprofit Sector (3) The course is designed to provide experiential and analytical opportunities for students in the nonprofit sector. As such it will focus on developmental and career issues that are relevant to leadership development in this sector especially the health care and governmental environments. The course goals are to expose students to the concepts related to emotional intelligence and related behaviors; to develop personal analytical skills of character and leadership development as understood through fiction literature; and to employ and develop their conceptual abilities applying the literature analyses to the experiential presentations by leaders in the nonprofit sector. Prerequisites: All M.P.H. core courses.
URHA 1503 Topics: Health Policy (3) This course examines selected issues and problems in public sector administration and management. The specific area within which issues are presented varies, but it may include health, public policy, human resources, and specialized topics. URHA 1505 Intergovernmental Relations and Management (3) Covers the constitutional basis for division of powers among the levels of government in the United States. Cooperation and conflict in managing the delivery of public services such as education, public safety, and health care are explored. URHA 1507 Leadership and Diversity (3) Leadership versus management; leadership qualities and characteristics; leadership skills, such as conflict management and team building; leadership tasks, including vision, agenda setting, and mobilizing resources; leadership in organizational and political settings; role of fellowship; and impact of diversity upon leaders and leadership. URHA 1543 Public Financial Management (3) This course surveys all major activities that concern the allocation, investment, and control of public funds. Activities include financial analysis, cash and pension fund investing, accounting, auditing, financial reporting, and brief mention of budgeting and revenues in the context of fiscal policymaking. URHA 1544 Law and Public Health in the United States (3) Public health and law are closely interrelated disciplines in the United States. Law structures public health practice and makes public health practice possible. Nonetheless, "law" and "public health" denote autonomous disciplines with specialized vocabularies, skills, and worldviews. One purpose of this 3-credit course is to provide tools for public health students to understand the role law plays in assuring the conditions for populations to be healthy. Prerequisites: All M.P.H. core courses.
URHA 1563 Research Design (3) This course examines research methodologies and techniques employed in policy and program assessment. It includes social indicators, quantitative and qualitative methods, and experimental and quasi-experimental designs as used in applied policy and program research. URHA 1570 Theory and Practice of Nonprofit Management (3) This course introduces theory, history, structure, and management of nonprofit organizations. Emphasis is given to critical functions such as fundraising and grantsmanship, financial management and budgeting, marketing and communications, leadership styles, and monitoring and evaluation. URHA 1629 Performance Measurement (3) Assessment of organizational performance, with particular attention to concepts of efficiency, effectiveness, outputs, and outcomes. Examines evaluation design, data collection procedures, data analyses, and citizen involvement. Students will come to see the value of citizens in the measurement of state and local government performance. Students are provided with the opportunity to wrestle with questions of accountability and appropriate participation techniques by acquainting them with the basic themes, concepts, and competencies of performance measurement. URHA 1641 Political Economy and Public Administration (3) This course surveys all major activities that concern the allocation, investment, and control of public funds.
