Students may choose to work toward a doctor of public health (Dr.P.H.) or doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. Some view the Dr.P.H. as a more practice-oriented degree and the Ph.D. as a more
research-oriented degree. The Dr.P.H. and Ph.D. degrees require a minimum of 72 credits for completion. Candidates for either doctoral degree will be required to complete a preliminary exam (for Department of Biostatistics only), qualifying written and oral examinations in major and minor areas (if applicable), as well as
complete and defend original dissertation research.
For program requirements, visit the Dr.P.H. and Ph.D. Degree webpage or each department's webpage.
For information about rules and procedures for the doctoral program, review the Doctoral Program Policy Handbook.
