School of Communication and Information 2023-2025 Master of Communication and Media Program Curriculum Overview Experiential Learning (6 credits)

Experiential Learning (6 credits)

All Master of Communication and Media (M.C.M.) students have the option to take up to 6 credits of experiential learning. In these supervised experiences, students will engage with practitioners to learn skills and perspectives. Grades are assigned based on a self-evaluation by the student and a supervisor-evaluation by the practitioner or faculty member. Students may complete this requirement in an online opportunity or in their local area through:
  • Internship: (150 hours for 3 credits) in businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, and/or Rutgers units/departments. Students cannot intern at their place of employment.
  • Practicum: work with faculty in executing cutting-edge research projects.
  • Teaching Internship: work as an assistant to a professor in a course related to their study.
  • Fellowship: apply and be selected as a fellow in the Johnson & Johnson M.C.M. Fellowship program. Six of the credits earned in this program may be applied to degree requirements. Fellows have tuition paid and receive a stipend.
  • Projects: unique projects related to a student's profession or for a selected organization.

Credits of experiential learning count toward the 24 credits of electives for the program.
