Technology Infrastructure

The School of Communication and Information (SC&I) has a fiber infrastructure and gigabit switched Ethernet environment, and a fully virtualized environment that supports both Windows and Linux servers. In addition, SC&I has multiple research sandbox servers and storage arrays. These systems provide space and application services for the research and curricular needs of the SC&I community. The school is a founding partner in collaboration with the Rutgers Office of Information Technology and School of Arts and Sciences in an 80-node high performance-computing cluster. The school also contracts with cloud vendors including Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Box for required services. System maintenance, compliance with university privacy, and security policies are handled by the SC&I IT staff.

Technology facilities include multi-use classrooms and laboratories. Each of the 14 classrooms, conference rooms, and laboratory facilities is equipped with technology and display devices to enable presentations, small group collaboration, and participatory learning and research. All facilities are equipped with either Microsoft- or Apple-based systems. There are a total of 108 systems to provide for classroom/laboratory use and general computing needs. There are also 60 mobile devices including tablets and cell phones available for application development and testing.

SC&I provides a suite of industry standard software for web development, multimedia creation, presentations and programming, and development. All software is available on the systems used by the faculty, staff, and students in-house and many are available via remote access for online and on-campus students. All servers and systems implement security groups and limited permissions. Individuals who create and store data control who views that data and how it can be manipulated. The IT staff monitor and recommend information protection strategies to all users. Data can be shared via FTP or NFS encrypted and protected network folders in cloud-based services.

The IT staff have expertise in system administration, web and application design and development, research and instructional support, and new technology development.  Faculty, staff, or students with technology needs can contact the IT Helpdesk at help@comminfo.rutgers.edu or 848-932-5555 for assistance.
