A collaborative effort between Rutgers Business School and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, the doctor of medicine (M.D.)/master of business administration (M.B.A.) dual-degree program in Newark provides medical students with a background relating to health care management. It provides them the opportunity for learning in a unique environment with a diverse community of students, taught by internationally renowned professors while broadening their career perspectives.

Applicants interested in the M.D./M.B.A. program are required to apply directly to Rutgers Business School either prior to matriculation at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School or during their first or second or third year of medical school. Medical school students are encourage to do the M.B.A. portion either prior to matriculating in the medical school or after their third year. Medical school applicants applying to the M.B.A. program are required to take the GMAT examination, and must apply and be accepted into Rutgers Business School independently of their medical school acceptance.

Curriculum

The M.B.A. curriculum requires the completion of 60 credits of coursework. This includes 25 credits of required core and foundation M.B.A. courses focused on accounting, economics, finance, decision analysis, marketing, statistics, information technology, supply chain management, law, and management strategies. This sequence of coursework also includes a choice of the 3-credit integrative requirement by completing Integrative Business Applications, Urban Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, Supply Chain Management Industry Project, or Evaluating New Ventures. The program is specifically targeted to the needs of medical students through the inclusion of 12 credits transferred in from the medical school in areas of ethics, environmental medicine, and clinical prevention. The remaining credits required for the M.B.A. represent elective business courses or noted substitutes selected on the basis of student interest and may include available courses at the Rutgers School of Public Health. Students admitted to the M.D./M.B.A. program will complete a total of 48 credits at Rutgers Business School.

Please note: M.D./M.B.A. students are exempt from the following courses in the M.B.A. curriculum:

  • Business, Ethics, and Society (22:373:623)
  • Career Development Program (22:135:583)
