Registration at Colleges outside of Rutgers

A student who wishes to enroll in courses at another institution and enroll simultaneously at Rutgers University-Newark must obtain permission from the appropriate dean. If a course is required for the student's major, permission must be obtained from the student's department chair also. All such requests must be made in writing well in advance of the deadline for registration at the other institution. Credit is not granted for work carried concurrently without prior permission.

New Jersey Institute of Technology

Students who wish to enroll in a course offered at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) must consult procedures posted on the Rutgers-Newark Office of the Registrar's website

Grades received from NJIT for exchange registration courses appear on the Rutgers transcript and are calculated in both the semester and cumulative grade-point averages.

Essex County College

Students who wish to enroll in a course offered at Essex County College must first seek approval to do so from their academic dean. Essex County College courses that have not been approved by the student's academic dean in advance of registration may not satisfy degree requirements at Rutgers University-Newark.

Students must then follow these procedures:

1. Obtain signatures on the exchange registration form, indicating approval by the appropriate dean and/or the student's department chair.

2. Register at Essex County College Office of the Registrar. Include Essex County College course on the Rutgers Exchange Form.

3. Bring proof of registration at Essex County College to the Rutgers-Newark Office of the Registrar to complete the cross-registration process. Students must adhere to add/drop deadlines posted on the Rutgers' academic calendar.

Satisfactory completion of exchange registration courses approved by the student's academic dean for completion at Essex County College appears as an exchange course with only credit applied toward the degree.
