Cocurricular Requirements and Student Life

Cocurricular Requirements

Cocurricular activities are designed for Honors College students to engage with each other, with the university community, the City of Newark, and within communities where they live. Students are required to complete community service hours annually to encourage students to give back to the community. They are required to attend sponsored events throughout the academic year to expose them to a variety of cultural, social, and academic experiences. We also require students to complete a yearly e-portfolio to reflect upon the trajectory of their education and make purposeful choices regarding their future.

Community Service

Students are required to complete 20 hours of community service each year.

e-Portfolio

The e-portfolio is a student's documentation of growth throughout the academic year. It includes a personal introduction, connections to local and global citizenship, career trajectory, and a reflection.

Event Attendance

Students are expected to attend six Honors College or Honors College-sponsored events of their choosing per academic year.

Student Life and Facilities

The Honors College provides numerous academic and social opportunities throughout the academic year.

Honors College students have access to the honors-only Esterly Lounge in Engelhard Hall, which serves as a central gathering place for honors students throughout their time at Rutgers.

In addition, student-led activities and programs are organized and presented by the Honors College Student Council.
