In the late 1960s, Newark College of Arts and Sciences (NCAS) moved to its current location. Located in the downtown business district of Newark, the college is part of an active, urban community that gives students access to Newark's arts and cultural institutions, experiential learning, and exceptional internship opportunities in both Newark and the metropolitan New York region. The college shares a growing campus with several other divisions of Rutgers, including Rutgers Business School (both undergraduate and graduate programs), the Graduate School-Newark, Rutgers School of Nursing (part of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences), Rutgers Law School in Newark, the School of Criminal Justice, and the School of Public Affairs and Administration.
The college is also connected by shuttle service to the nearby Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences division at Newark, with which it shares a number of joint degree programs. It is within walking distance of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), where students can take courses through an exchange-registration program.
The campus has continued to experience unprecedented growth with its state-of-the-art 67,740-square-foot Life Sciences I building and a 93,000-square-foot Life Sciences II building. Both facilities enhance and expand the university's life sciences education and research programs, bringing cutting-edge labs and teaching classrooms to students while attracting new faculty who will expand Rutgers University-Newark's impact on both the local community and the world.
In addition, the campus has continued to expand its housing stock with the renovation of Rutgers University-Newark's 15 Washington Street building, a stately 17-story edifice that houses graduate and upper-class undergraduate students, the chancellor's residence, and a first-floor Great Hall that is used for public gatherings, events, and special programs. A 400-bed Honors Living-Learning Community residential facility will open on the block bounded by New, Washington, Halsey, and Linden Streets. The 320,000-square-foot mixed-use development will include undergraduate residences, classrooms, workspaces, street-level retail and parking, as well as a vibrant, open space that will be a gathering place for Rutgers University-Newark and the surrounding community.
