Certificate Program

Graduate, nonmatriculated students, teachers, and other professionals seeking to strengthen their area expertise in Iberian Studies (Spanish and Portuguese related areas) are encouraged to earn a certificate in Spanish and Portuguese studies as a way to acquire advanced professional development in those area of studies. This certificate may be professionally attractive for expansion of career options, such as translator, teaching consultant, and so on. In addition, this 15-credit graduate certificate program is designed to address the needs of pre-service and in-service teachers who need to improve or enhance their skills in the field of Spanish or Portuguese.

The certificate offers coursework that combines both literary and linguistic cultural studies engaging the multiple and diverse traditions of the Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking worlds. It also introduces the latest uses of technology in the classroom and methods of assessment. Coursework can be counted toward the certification of professional licensure in the state of New Jersey. For more information about New Jersey certification, visit http://www.state.nj.us/njded.

Students and teachers interested in pursuing the certificate should meet the following requirements:

1. Successful completion of 15 graduate-level credits (four courses, with a grade B or above in each). Courses must be approved in advance by the program director and in consultation with the faculty member teaching the course. Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in scheduled seminars to fulfill this requirement. However, in some cases 3 credits may be a directed research/independent study course, supervised by a member of the faculty.

2. Successful completion of a significant research project in Spanish or Portuguese studies.

3. Demonstrated language proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese. The student should be able to carry out research in the field and to converse with native speakers. Proficiency may be attained through coursework (having completed the second year of language study) or informal education. Proficiency will be determined by completed coursework or by examination.

Students satisfying these requirements will be awarded the graduate certificate in Spanish and Portuguese studies upon completion of their degree.
