The Program in American Language Studies (PALS) is the English as a
Second Language (ESL) curriculum at Rutgers. It provides nonnative
speakers with the English skills they need for academic work in the
United States. In August, international teaching assistants receive two
weeks of classes in communications skills and teaching techniques. PALS
also offers the following courses in the fall and spring terms:
Advanced Pronunciation
Comprehension and Conversation
Grammar and Composition
Graduate ESL Seminar
Class sizes are limited, which permits teachers to give students
individualized attention. Students must register to attend PALS
courses, and the results of a diagnostic test determine where they are
placed in classes. Supplemental assistance is available through
computer labs. The PALS office is located at 232 Smith Hall. To contact
PALS for more information, telephone 973/353-5013, or send an email to
pals@andromeda.rutgers.edu.
