Master of Public Health Degree Program (M.P.H.)

The Newark Public Health Program at Science Park (NPHPSP) offers a joint-degree program leading to a master in public health degree. The degree is conferred by the UMDNJ-School of Public Health in conjunction with the Graduate School-Newark, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the Public Health Research Institute. The unique mission of the Newark campus involves public health with urban and disadvantaged populations.

To matriculate, students apply directly to the UMDNJ- School of Public Health in Piscataway and specify the Newark campus as their first choice. To successfully complete the M.P.H. degree, students must take 45 credits, including core classes, required classes, and electives in the student`s area of concentration, do field work related to their concentration, and prepare a final paper and presentation based on their field work. In addition to three 1-credit courses in SASS, Epi-info, and Microsoft Office, students must take 15 credits in required core courses in the following areas: epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health care systems and policy, health education, and public health issues. After completing the core classes, students specialize in one of the following tracks: quantitative methods (either epidemiology or biostatistics), urban health administration (UHA), and dental public health (through UMDNJ). Classes in the UHA track are offered in conjunction with the graduate program in public administration at Rutgers-Newark.
