Academic Advising

Academic advising assists students with recognizing and achieving their educational goals, developing an academic plan to meet their educational and professional goals, and understanding and interpreting the requirements and academic options within the School of Nursing. This policy identifies who serves as academic advisers for students in all School of Nursing baccalaureate and graduate programs.

Baccalaureate Programs

Traditional Program Students
The Department of Student Services Operations provides academic advisement for undergraduate first-year and sophomore students. The main objective of the department is to assist students to successfully progress through their general education and prerequisites courses for the nursing major. Students attend advisement sessions each semester prior to the registration period. Advisement sessions are announced in advance. Upon entering junior year, select nursing faculty provide academic advisement to assist students to successfully progress through the nursing major. They are also available to assist students with direction to reach their individual career goals.

Second-Degree Program Students
Second-degree program students are administratively registered through the School of Nursing. Second-degree program students are assigned academic advisers shortly after being admitted to the program. Students should communicate with their academic adviser and/or the program director of the second-degree program with any academic questions. They are also available to assist students with direction to reach their individual career goals.

R.N. to B.S. in Nursing Program Students
The codirectors for the R.N. to B.S. program serve as the academic advisers. R.N. students will be assigned an adviser shortly upon admission to the program. Students should contact their academic adviser prior to course registration for any academic questions or guidance to ensure successful program completion.

School Nurse Certificate Students
The director for the school nurse program serves as the academic adviser for enrolled students. Students should contact the program director prior to course registration for any academic questions or guidance to ensure successful program completion.

Graduate Students

Master's, Post-Master's, D.N.P., and Ph.D. Students (including midwifery and nurse anesthesia students)
Graduate program specialty directors or their designees serve as academic advisers for master's, post-master's, D.N.P., and Ph.D. students enrolled in each of the specialty programs. Students will be assigned an adviser/director shortly after being admitted to the program. Students should contact their academic adviser prior to course registration for any academic questions or guidance to ensure successful program completion.

Nondegree Students
Academic advisement for students who wish to take graduate courses without enrolling in a degree program will be provided by the associate dean of advanced nursing practice.
