Theater

The theater department stages approximately eight to 10 projects a year. These projects include the Rutgers Theater Company's fully produced plays, including a Shakespearian production; the Playwrights Festival; and special presentations in the Jameson Studio Theater and other studio spaces.

Performance facilities include the Philip J. Levin Theater, a three-quarter theater with 200 seats; the Victoria J. Mastrobuono Theater, a state-of-the-art, 335-seat proscenium theater; the intimate, 60-seat Jameson Studio Theater; and two studios equipped with lighting for small audiences.

The department has well-equipped production facilities, including a scene shop, a property shop with a dedicated wood shop for furniture building, a costume production shop, and a state-of-the-art sound studio.

Teaching facilities include a costume teaching shop, a lighting laboratory, a computer-assisted design laboratory, two design studios, a movement studio, and four acting/rehearsal studios.

Mortensen Hall opened in the fall of 2013. This wraparound facility melds existing venues into a cohesive and vibrant performing arts hub and features Richard H. Shindell Choral Hall; a large public atrium featuring Café '52, a coffee, sandwich, and sushi bar; and a technology studio for sound recording and engineering. It also includes the Presser Foundation Practice Suite for music and the Kevin Goetz Studio for Theater and Dance.
