Graduation Requirements for the Major


Students matriculating prior to the fall semester 2015 in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) must complete the SEBS general education requirements. In addition, students majoring in microbiology must complete the major requirements described below.

Students matriculating fall 2015 or after and transfer students matriculating in 2016 and after must complete a goal-based Core Curriculum in place of general education requirements. The goal-based core is described here: http://sebs.rutgers.edu/core. Courses are certified for the Core Curriculum by a faculty committee. A current list of certified courses can be found here: http://sebs.rutgers.edu/core. Microbiology major requirements are as described below.

All students, regardless of matriculation date must complete a minimum of 20 credits of microbiology major coursework from among the required and elective courses (Area VIII). Proficiency in microbiology, not including quantitative skills (8 credits), must be completed in residence. Of these 20 credits, at least 12 credits must be completed from 680 courses. This rule is intended to assure that students receiving degrees from Rutgers University-New Brunswick have taken a minimum number of courses in their major with New Brunswick faculty. Please keep in mind that although a course may transfer from another institution into one of the Rutgers-New Brunswick schools, it will not necessarily be accepted toward the major in microbiology. Therefore, transfer courses must be evaluated and accepted by the undergraduate program director in order to count toward the major.
