Poor Academic Performance



Academic Review.  At the end of each semester, the Committee on Scholastic Standing, composed of faculty and academic staff, will review and may take action on the record of every student whose semester or cumulative grade-point average (GPA) is below 2.000 or whose cumulative GPA within the major is below 2.0. Students who were placed on probation at the end of the previous semester also are reviewed. The committee may dismiss students from the School of Engineering (except at the end of the first semester) or place students on academic warning, registration holding, or probation. All such students are notified via email. However, all students are responsible for monitoring their own academic record and performance, and failure to receive the notification does not nullify the academic standing action. In addition, students are encouraged to seek assistance early on from the appropriate university resources.  

Probation.  Students are placed on probation when the academic record indicates that the student is in danger of being dismissed unless substantial improvement is shown. Students who, for the first time, have earned less than 2.0 in the cumulative GPA or major GPA are placed on academic probation. Students are notified in writing of probationary status and the conditions of probation before the start of the next semester. While on academic probation, students are required to consult with academic advisers regularly, curtail extracurricular activities, attend class regularly, and seek assistance from the appropriate university resources. Removal from probation depends on demonstrated improvement of academic performance in grades and progress in the curriculum, in the following semester.

Students placed on probationary status may appeal if there were technical error and/or changes in temporary grades. The appeal must be submitted to the Committee on Scholastic Standing before the deadline as indicated on the probation notice letter.

Dismissal.  Except for students in their first semester, students may be dismissed after one semester on probation if cumulative GPA is still below 2.0 or major GPA is below 2.0. Students can also be dismissed due to the lack of progress along the engineering curriculum. Students with unexpected or extenuating circumstances can appeal immediately after receiving the dismissal notice. Legitimate extenuating circumstances could be recent physical or mental illness, recent illness/death in family, official grade changes, etc. Appeal letters should summarize the extenuating circumstances, include documentation, and provide a realistic plan to overcome the quoted circumstances. Instructions on how and where to submit the appeal will be included in the dismissal notice. The appeal must be submitted to the Committee on Scholastic Standing before the deadline as indicated on the dismissal notice letter. Action by the committee is final. 

Readmission.  Students who have been dismissed from the school due to poor academic performance may not apply for readmission until they can produce evidence to indicate that the causes of failure have been overcome. Normally, this evidence consists of the satisfactory completion of one year of work at another accredited college in a program of study approved in advance by the academic deans at the School of Engineering Office of Academic Services. Students will not be considered for readmission after a second dismissal action. Each application for readmission is considered on its own merits. In no case may it be assumed that satisfactory grades at another institution will automatically lead to readmission.
