Major Requirements


Instrumental Performance Concentration

Students in the instrumental performance concentration must take the following courses in music theory (25 credits):

In addition to these requirements, students in the instrumental performance concentration must pass the piano proficiency exam and also complete the following course of study (50 credits):

Music electives (7) To fulfill the 7 credits of music electives, courses may be selected from any 300- or 400-level music courses not being counted toward the music major requirements, or 200-level music courses pending approval of the coordinator of undergraduate studies. Students may use Classroom Piano to satisfy 4 of the 7 music elective credits.

Free electives (3) To fulfill the 3 credits of free electives, courses may be selected from any music course or any non-music courses.

Students in the instrumental performance concentration must complete a minimum of 33 credits in liberal arts courses (see Degree Requirements), for a total of 120 credits required for graduation. All performance students present a recital in the senior year in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation. Acceptability of this recital is determined by a faculty jury in attendance.

Vocal Performance Concentration

Students in the vocal performance concentration must take the following courses in music theory (25 credits):

+Four semesters of vocal coaching will be required for vocal performance majors who enroll fall 2018 and thereafter.
+Applied Major Lesson requirement will be reduced from 24 to 20 credits for vocal performance majors who enroll fall 2018 and thereafter.
+Diction for Singers satisfies 2 credits of the chamber music requirement.

Music Education Concentration

Students in the music education concentration take the following courses in music theory (26 credits):

There are two streams that music education majors may follow: vocal/general concentration, which requires 122 total credits for graduation, and instrumental concentration, which requires a total of 123 credits for graduation. All music education students must present a 30-minute recital in the senior year in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation. The total number of requirements for each concentration includes 30 credits in liberal arts courses. The music education degree plan is specifically designed so that students acquire course credits necessary to both graduate with a degree from Rutgers AND meet the teacher certification requirements for the state of New Jersey. Prior to acceptance into the Music Education Professional Sequence, students must either demonstrate adequate SAT/ACT scores or pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Combined Exam (code:5751). In order to be certified as a licensed New Jersey educator, students must also complete and pass a series of exams as required by the state of New Jersey.

+These 3 credits are included in the 30 Liberal Arts credits.

Jazz Studies Concentration

Students concentrating in jazz studies must pass the piano proficiency exam and the following course of study (89 credits):

+Composition majors must enroll in two semesters of Helix.
*Bachelor of music students must enroll in a large ensemble in every semester of enrollment with the exception of music education majors in the semester in which they are enrolled in Clinical Practice II and Composition majors after they have completed the required 6 semesters of large ensemble. The music department will assign all students to the ensemble of its choice.
