Limits on Transfer Credits.
The following limits are set on the maximum number of degree credits transferable into the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS): no more than 60 credits from two-year institutions, no more than 90 credits from four-year institutions, and no more than 12 of the last 42 credits earned for the degree may be transfer credits.
Once a student has transferred to Rutgers University and if
they received the maximum number of credits from a two-year institution, they
may not take additional courses at a two-year institution for transfer credit
at Rutgers. Students may also not decline previously awarded credit in exchange
for additional transfer credit. This applies for students awarded the maximum
amount of credits from a four-year institution as well.General Transfer. Students who were formerly matriculated at accredited institutions outside of Rutgers University may be entitled to transfer some credits earned there, subject to the following conditions: All credits are evaluated by the appropriate academic department in consultation with the dean of SAS. No credit is accepted in transfer if the grade earned is below the equivalent of C (2.000) at Rutgers. Grades from institutions other than Rutgers are not posted to the transcript or included in the Rutgers cumulative grade-point average.
Courses that were not offered in traditional classroom format (for example, independent studies, internships, fieldwork, etc.) are typically awarded transfer credit only upon the recommendation of the appropriate academic department. Transfer credit is not awarded for courses passed by examination at other institutions.
Extension, professional, military, technical training, and continuing
education courses typically have informal or no prerequisites and are
designed to provide discrete, targeted knowledge rather than being a
part of a broader liberal arts curriculum. As such, many of these
courses are not awarded credit in SAS unless they are clearly equivalent
to courses offered by SAS.
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), including those taught through
Coursera, are not transferable to SAS. In addition, courses without any
mechanisms to ensure academic integrity, such as secure testing
practices, may not be awarded transfer credit.
Academic departments often have restrictions on the application of transfer courses toward specific major or minor requirements.
High School Coursework. Under New Jersey state law, certain approved courses in high school may be taken for college credit. Students should consult with an adviser to determine if these courses qualify for credit at SAS, and actually provide an adequate background as a prerequisite to the next level of coursework in SAS. Additional information governing the transfer of college credits earned
while still in high school can be found on the SAS Office of Academic Services
website.
Please
note that for courses taken at New Jersey community colleges while the student is in
high school or courses taken at the high school and recorded on a college
transcript, njtransfer.org cannot be
used to determine course equivalencies. Some courses with Rutgers equivalents
in njtransfer.org may transfer as
elective credit, or may not transfer at all if taken while the student was in
high school. It is important to send all transcripts to the Office of Academic
Services for a complete evaluation.
For students who complete courses in high school that are
reported on a college transcript, a maximum of 16 credits may transfer, with no
more than two courses in a given semester. For questions about dual enrollment
credits, please contact the SAS First-Year Advising Office.Transfer from New Jersey County or Community Colleges. In the case of students who apply and are admitted directly to SAS after successfully completing an associate's degree (A.A. or A.S.) transfer program at any public New Jersey county or community college that conforms with the statewide transfer agreement, credits taken at the community college awarding the degree and required for that degree program are accepted for transfer credit, up to a total of 60 credits, and those students are not required to complete the core curriculum. This excludes transfer credits accepted by the community
college from other institutions, credits earned by examination, credits in
physical education, and courses equivalent to noncredit courses offered by SAS.
Credits earned beyond the requirements for the degree program are evaluated for
transfer on a course-by-course basis.
Transfer credits from New Jersey county or community colleges for students who did not earn an associate's degree conforming with the statewide transfer agreement are considered under the General Transfer policies outlined above.
Credits earned at another college after receiving an associate's degree from a New Jersey county or community college are considered under the General Transfer policies outlined above.
Transfer from Colleges or Universities Outside the United States. Students who wish to obtain transfer credit for courses taken at institutions outside the United States may be required to furnish a course-by-course evaluation from an acceptable professional evaluation service or, in some instances, a review of course syllabi and transcripts by the appropriate SAS academic department.
Transfer Policies for the Core Curriculum. All students must complete the 21st Century Challenges
learning goals at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. No transfer or AP courses can be used to fulfill these learning goals.
Once a student matriculates at SAS, writing courses must
be completed at Rutgers-New Brunswick. Transfer credit for 01:355:101 is not awarded except to transfer students. However, the two-part writing sequences from Rutgers University–Camden
and Rutgers University–Newark may still substitute for 01:355:101, provided that both
courses are passed before matriculating at SAS.
All students must complete the Revision-Based Writing and
Communication Learning Goal [WCr] by taking a class at Rutgers-New Brunswick;
transfer and AP courses are not certified to meet this learning goal.
All students will be able to complete the Discipline-Based
Writing and Communication Learning Goal [WCd] with either a Rutgers-New
Brunswick course or a transfer course equivalent to a Rutgers course that has
been certified as meeting the [WCd] goal.
In all other cases, when a course transfers as equivalent to
a course that has been certified as meeting a core curriculum goal, SAS will
accept that course as fulfilling that core curriculum requirement.
Courses without a Rutgers-New Brunswick equivalent will be
reviewed on a course-by-course basis. In considering courses for incoming transfer students from the New Jersey community colleges, the general rule is that if the
course meets the cognate general education requirement under the statewide
transfer agreement, SAS will accept it as meeting the core requirement. As such courses are reviewed, this will
be noted in NJ Transfer.
Transfer Evaluation Appeals for Students
Transferring from New Jersey Community Colleges. Students who wish to appeal their New Jersey Community College
transfer evaluation to the School of Arts and Sciences must do so within 30
days of receiving their Official Transfer Summary Report.
Students
should first refer to njtransfer.org to
determine the proper evaluation of any given course offered at a New Jersey
Community College. If the transfer evaluation and njtransfer.org are in disagreement the
student should notify the SAS Transfer Center via email at transfers@sas.rutgers.edu. The
email should include the student name, RUID, and the specific information
detailing the error. All clerical errors will be corrected promptly and the
student will be notified by return email within 30 days.
If
the student is appealing the nature of the evaluation as correctly stated on njtransfer.org, they shall submit a
completed copy of the Transfer
Course Departmental Evaluation with an attached syllabus of the course in
question to the undergraduate director of the specific academic department in
which transfer credit is sought. If the department agrees that the evaluation
for the course needs to be updated they will notify the SAS Transfer Center.
Upon such written notification, njtransfer.org
will be updated appropriately and the student record will be adjusted
accordingly within 30 days of receipt of notification from the academic
department.
Transfer Evaluation Appeals for Students Transferring from Schools Other
than New Jersey Community Colleges. Students shall submit a completed copy of the Transfer
Course Departmental Evaluation with an attached syllabus of the course in
question to the undergraduate director of the specific academic department in
which transfer credit is sought. If the department agrees that the evaluation
for the course needs to be updated they will notify the SAS Transfer Center.
Upon such written notification, the student's record will be adjusted
accordingly within 30 days of receipt of notification from the academic
department.
