The five-year, dual-degree program in engineering and the liberal arts/sciences is offered by the School of Engineering in cooperation with the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS). The five-year program leads to a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree in any of the engineering curricula listed at the beginning of this chapter and a bachelor of arts (B.A.) or B.S. degree in any major offered by SAS.
Students interested in the five-year program may apply prior to their first year to SAS under whose jurisdiction they remain for the first two years. Transfer to the School of Engineering at the end of the second year is not automatic; students' records are reviewed at the end of the third semester by the School of Engineering. After acceptance, students come under the academic jurisdiction of the School of Engineering for the remaining three years of the program. Alternatively, students in the four-year engineering program may apply to SAS after their first year and prior to their final year for admission to the program.
In all five-year curricula, the engineering portion of the program for the first two years is common. Selection of a particular engineering field of study is made at the end of the second year. After transferring to the School of Engineering, students remain affiliated with SAS for student services and continue to be responsible for completion of SAS requirements for the B.A. (or B.S.) degree. If the SAS major is in a mathematics, science, or computational area, a full minor in a humanities or social science subject is required. Both degrees are conferred at the end of the fifth year. The program requires that both degrees must be conferred at the same time even if requirements for one degree are completed before the other.
