Student Responsibility to Keep Informed
The Department of Theater makes special demands on students enrolled in the master of fine arts (M.F.A.) and bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) training programs because of the professional nature of the programs and the demands of the profession. Specific rules and policies are published in the Guide for Actors in the Theater Department and the Guide for Design and Production Students in the Theater Arts Department. Students are responsible for understanding and following all rules and policies set forth in these documents, as well as those in the online graduate or online undergraduate university catalog.

Attendance in M.F.A. and B.F.A. Conservatory Classes
Absence from any class is problematic. In the event that an absence is unavoidable, it is the student's responsibility to discuss the absence with the instructor to determine whether the absence is excused. One unexcused absence from class can lower the student's final grade; two unexcused absences may result in failure. In the B.F.A. Acting Program, no unexcused absences are permitted in any class. Three late arrivals are equal to one unexcused absence. Students are responsible for making up any missed work and being properly prepared for the next class. Students may use the University Absence Reporting Website: https://sims.rutgers.edu/ssra. This will generate an email to the instructor informing him or her of the absence. It is the student's responsibility to discuss absences with the instructor, before the absence when feasible, but no later than the next class session in attendance. Excessive absences will affect class performance. Students are encouraged to submit medical documentation for illnesses. In some cases, the department may require medical documentation before excusing an absence. Absences due to illness are generally excused. Extensive absence due to illness will be discussed with the department chair and the Mason Gross School of the Arts dean of students to determine the most suitable course of action. The attendance policy for the design and technology program is that two unexcused absences from any class will result in failure of that class. Recognized religious holidays will be excused with advance notice as noted above. One unexcused absence will result in a drop of one full grade from the class at the very least. Three late arrivals of 10 minutes or longer will add up to one unexcused absence, and late arrivals of lesser amounts will erode a student's grade to some degree.

Program and Class Fees
Students in acting and design are assessed professional program fees that support professional training and career transition. Some courses charge specific fees for tickets, models, or supplies. Should a student leave or be dismissed from the program, all fees are nonrefundable.

Repeated Courses
Theater arts B.F.A. students may repeat a liberal arts course taken at Rutgers in accordance with the regulation stated in the Academic Policies and Procedures chapter of the Mason Gross School of the Arts section of this catalog.

Bachelor of Arts

The theater arts department also offers a bachelor of arts (B.A.) major and minor in theater arts to liberal arts students enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences. See Theater Arts in the Programs of Study and Courses for Liberal Arts Students section of this catalog for B.A. program information.
