Major Requirements


Performance Concentration

Students in the performance concentration must take the following courses in music theory (25 credits):

  07:700:221-222  Theory III,IV (3,3)

  07:700:329  Introduction to Conducting (2)

Performance students must also take the following courses in music history (12 credits):

  07:700:301-302  Music History I,II (3,3)

  07:700:303  Special Topics in World Music (3)

  07:700:419 or 420  Special Studies in Music History (3)

In addition to these requirements, students must  pass the piano proficiency exam and also complete the following course of study (43 credits):

  07:701:407,408  Twentieth-Century Performance Seminar (1,1)

  large ensemble courses (8)*

  electives in music (10) These 10 elective credits are needed in order to earn the 120 credits required for graduation. Three of these credits must be from liberal arts courses. The remaining 7 credits may come from any 701 course, 4 of which may be piano class, or 700 courses at the 300 level or above.

Students in the performance concentration must complete a minimum of 33 credits in liberal arts courses (see Degree Requirements) and 10 additional credits of elective courses, for a total of 120 credits required for graduation. All performance students present a recital in the senior year in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation. Acceptability of this recital is determined by a faculty jury in attendance.

Students in the music education concentration take the following courses in music theory (29 credits):

In addition to these requirements, students must pass the piano proficiency exam and also complete the following course of study (53 credits):

There are three streams that music education may follow: vocal/general concentration with an instrumental major, vocal/general concentration with an instrumental major, both of which require 121 total credits for graduation, and instrumental concentration, which requires a total of 123 credits for graduation. The total number of requirements for each concentration includes 30 credits in liberal arts courses. Some of these credits are in courses specified for certification. In order for state certification to be granted, the National Teachers Examination must be passed.

Jazz Studies Concentration

Students concentrating in jazz studies must complete students must pass the piano proficiency exam and the following course of study (85 credits):

Students in the jazz studies concentration must complete a minimum of 36 credits in liberal arts courses (see the Degree Requirements chapter), for a total of 121 credits required for graduation. All jazz students present a recital in the senior year in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation. Acceptability of this recital is determined by a faculty jury in attendance.

*Bachelor of music students must enroll in a large ensemble each semester. The music department may assign any student to the ensemble of its choice.
