Complementing any major, the minor in digital communication, information, and media is designed to offer students experience in digital media communication and information management. Students will learn how to judge which digital toolkits are worthwhile and how to use those tools to advance particular messages and goals. Students will be prepared to lead in digital environments by gaining a combination of technical, analytical, interpersonal, and entrepreneurial skill sets and learning how to evaluate, organize, and produce a variety of forms of communication and information in order to advance particular messages and goals.
Courses in the program offer a strong theoretical background in interpersonal communication, information management, and media and design along with a grounding in real-world scenarios, projects, and missions so that skills can be tested and refined. The courses are offered in a hybrid format with half of the experience online (including one class that takes place in Second Life) to help students learn to transition seamlessly from face-to-face interactions to digital interactions with professional poise. A final capstone class helps students integrate what they have learned with their major or other area of interest.
Students may declare the major after successful completion of one of the 100-level classes with a grade of C or better. School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) students declare the major through the SAS MyMajor portal; all other students declare through the School of Communication and Information Student Services Office.
Students are required to complete all six courses in the minor, for a total of 18 credits.
