Journalism and media studies majors must complete two courses (6 credits) at SCILS outside their major courses:

Students must complete 30 credits in the journalism and media studies program for the major:
Core Requirements (9 credits):
All students must complete these two courses:
04:567:324 News Reporting and Writing (skills course)
04:567:480 Media Ethics and Law
All students must complete at least one of the following two courses:
04:567:310 Broadcast News Writing (skills course) OR
04:567:325 Writing and Editing for Print Media
Conceptual Requirements (6 credits):
All students must take at least two conceptual courses in journalism and media studies. Courses such as 04:567:278 News Media and Government in America, 04:567:334 Women, Minorities and the Media, and 04:567:350 Development of Mass Media, among others, fulfill this requirement. Check the SCILS website for a complete list of which courses will fulfill this requirement.
Elective Requirements (15 credits):
Each student must complete 15 credits at the 567:300 and 400 level. Students are strongly encouraged to take 567:394, a 6-credit internship. See below for further information. A maximum of 9 credits may be taken in a combination of internship and independent study.
Students must earn a grade of C or better in all 04:567 curriculum courses in order for those courses to count towards the major.
A second major or minor is viewed as highly advantageous for students preparing for a career in the mass media.
At the time of publication of this catalog, the Department of Journalism and Media Studies does not offer a minor.
