A theoretical and creative examination of visual, physical, and spiritual understanding of theatrical spaces and their relation to the artist, audience, and performance. The class is both a seminar and a studio practicum utilizing theatrical and non-theatrical texts. The class culminates in space-inspired performances created by student collaboration teams.

08:966:549-550 Directing II: The Playwright's Voice (3,3) Work in more complex and innovative forms that build on the skills and theories taught in 08:966:519-520  Directing I. Through research, discussion, and videos, the student is taught to identify and interpret the voice of the playwright. Short plays by playwrights with widely different styles--such as Shanley, Mamet, Pinter, and Williams--are directed for class. The student is expected to bring as many production values to the effort as he or she can achieve. Prerequisites: 08:966:519-520.

Classical trompe l'oeil painting and modern scene painting for classroom projects and departmental productions. Organization and painting of full stage drops emphasized. Materials fee.

08:966:559 Fabric Dyeing (2)
To learn the basics of fabric dyeing including color matching, ombre, shibori, resist-dyeing, fabric painting and distressing using union dyes, fiber specific dyes and fabric paint. Safety issues and concerns will also be addressed.

This course will introduce the student to each of the areas of costume crafts in which include but are not limited to a variety of materials. Millinery basic techniques will also be explored.

08:966:563 Draping I: Introduction to Draping (3)
In this course, students will obtain a basic knowledge of pattern drafting based on draping to an individual, starting with the dress form and fitting it to a specific body. We will use draping techniques to learn pattern manipulation for garments post-1920's.

The objective of this course is to focus on the fit of clothing and costumes to individuals. You will learn how to identify fit issues in a fitting setting and how to correct the pattern. Bias construction, flat-patterning, working with stretch, and direction-giving will be explored.

Explores the theories, practices, and the ideas behind the art of theater and theatrical performance in the 21st century, with an emphasis on historical perspectives and contemporary applications. Students will analyze how different societies and perspectives shape the theatrical form and the experience of it. Course builds on concepts and skills learned in script analysis and applies them to close reads of two dramatic works and an intensive reading of two others. How does the actor get the most out of the first readings of a play? How do different works demand different or similar approaches? Course will explore human history through the lens of fashion using a mulch-disciplinary approach for each period and drawing on art history, anthropology, psychology, economic and political history, as well as sociology to understand the major arcs of fashion and how they reflect the cultural consciousness of their time.
