International Applicants

International applicants are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if English is not their native language. For further information, write to TOEFL, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541, U.S.A., or access the TOEFL web site at http://www.toefl.org. Satisfactory English proficiency is a prerequisite for graduate study at the university. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based) is expected; theater arts requires a score of 600 (paper based) or 250 (computer based) to ensure verbal proficiency. Applicants of questionable language proficiency are required to take a test upon arrival at the university and may be required to take English as a Second Language course work in the Program in American Language Studies (PALS). New international students who receive teaching assistantships are required to pass an oral proficiency test regardless of their TOEFL score. Nonimmigrant students must present evidence of adequate financial resources.
