Global Programs

Given the importance of fostering an educational perspective that understands the intersections among local, national, and global boundaries, Graduate School of Education (GSE) global efforts facilitate the integration of academic content and exchange between GSE faculty and students, educators, and learners from schools and universities abroad. These experiences provide the framework for ethical cooperation and joint ventures in research, instructional collaboration, cultural immersion, and community engagement. We are committed to educating students for responsible global citizenship in ways that both deepen their learning and have a transformative impact on local and global communities.

Study Programs outside the United States

GSE faculty and staff are committed to providing opportunities for students and educators to experience cultures and educational systems within and outside of New Jersey classrooms. Educators and graduate students participate in workshops, classes, and seminars with educational experts and engage in hands-on classroom and community-service activities in diverse communities abroad. Participants gain new perspectives and develop curricular innovations and interventions that are brought back for dissemination in their local communities.

South Africa Initiative

Launched in the fall of 2001, the Rutgers Graduate School of Education's South Africa Initiative (SAI) provides experiences for students and educators to increase their cultural awareness, knowledge, and empathy and to better understand their cultural identity while observing and examining the sociopolitical realities of South African communities and schools. The SAI vision is to develop a true exchange of talent and expertise via in-person contact and through distance-education technology, where students and adult learners from the United States and South Africa receive access to knowledge, support, and resources that are critical to cultural understanding and the improvement of teaching and learning.

Rutgers and non-Rutgers students, alumni, and professionals in all fields may enroll in a 3-credit hybrid course designed to provide a cultural lens for exploring race and diversity within a sociopolitical context abroad. The course culminates with two weeks of cultural engagement and service learning with schools and social empowerment projects in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Community-Engaged Language Learning in Yucatan

Graduate School of Education students have the opportunity to join a program focused on community-engaged education and language learning in Mérida, Yucatan, during the winter break. Activities include collaborative opportunities with Mexican university students at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán and students in Mexican K-12 classrooms in urban and rural settings. Participants have opportunities to learn from the rich culture of Mexico  through exposure to the Mayan culture, colonial influences and contemporary life in Mérida, while developing their intercultural competence and knowledge, skills, and dispositions to practice culturally relevant pedagogy.
