Program Description: The Ed.M. in Education, Culture, and Society provides students with an opportunity for advanced study and research in education from the perspectives provided by the social sciences and humanities. In order to fulfill their requirements, students can take courses across the program or can opt to focus their studies in one of four area; Race and Ethnicity; Global Education, Queer and Gender Studies, or Educational Policy. Additional courses across the university are available to supplement the
offerings in these four areas of study.
Students will:
- Develop perspectives critical to understanding education as a social process situated in political, historical, social, economic, and cultural contexts.
- Understand issues of social justice and equity in educative settings, informed by theory and research.
- Develop global and multicultural competencies.

Qualified students can use their elective credits to obtain a non-degree
supervisor endorsement or a range of other certificates at the GSE or across
the university.
*Students have the option of completing a master's thesis by
enrolling in 15:310:599 Master Thesis Research, but this is not a requirement.
**Students can take any selection of Education, Culture, and
Society courses here in consultation with their adviser or they can choose to
focus in a particular specialization.
