The Graduate School of Education offers a postbaccalaureate master's degree/initial teacher certification program in English as a Second Language (ESL) Education. The program requires that a student have an appropriate liberal arts major, 90 credits in liberal arts, and satisfaction of the general education distribution. The requirements needed to satisfy the general education distribution can be found in the Office of Student and Academic Services, Room 110, Graduate School of Education (848-932-3232).

Language and Cultural Proficiency Requirements

1. Proficiency in English to be demonstrated through an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and a Writing Proficiency Test (WPT). To schedule the OPI and WPT, contact the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) at http://www.languagetesting.com. OPI and WPT results must be on file with the Office of Student and Academic Services prior to student teaching.

2. Evidence of second/foreign language or cultural experience, such as experience living in a second cultural setting; completion of one or more foreign language course(s) (minimum 3 credits); acquisition of second/foreign language (in a nontraditional setting).

3. There is no OPI for Latin; however, there is a Latin test requirement: http://www.state.nj.us/education/aps/cccs/wl/latin_test.htm.
