A certificate is a grouping of five or so courses, offered by key, multiple departments, that if taken, indicate that the student has developed cross-disciplinary expertise in a particular subject area. Certificates can be awarded by any of the participating departments or programs. Each participating department, school, or program has a coordinator for the certificate. The certificate differs from a concentration in that multiple Rutgers departments or schools are involved in the certificate.

Coastal Climate Risk and Resilience Certificate

The Bloustein School, the Institute of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS), the Department of Human Ecology, and the Department of Civil Engineering have developed a certificate in coastal climate risk and resilience. The certificate focuses on the theories, methods, practical skills, and contextual knowledge needed to work productively on coastal areas and their populations which are extremely vulnerable to effects of climate change, ranging from sea-level rise to intensified storm events, and understanding both the risks and the adaptation opportunities requires knowledge from several disciplines.

Energy Certificate

The graduate certificate in energy, offered by the Bloustein School and Rutgers Energy Institute, is designed to give Rutgers students a strong background in the timely topic of energy. By taking advantage of the many energy-related courses offered at Rutgers as well as ongoing research involving all aspects of energy, the certificate builds on the diversity, magnitude, and variety of Rutgers resources in science, engineering, and public policy by enabling graduate students to cross over to courses outside their graduate program and enrich their background in energy. Students receiving this certificate will have received a broad exposure to the topics and challenges in energy, and will have stronger qualifications to pursue a career in industry, government, and academia upon graduation, as well as become leaders in innovation. Currently, Rutgers is unique in New Jersey offering a Graduate Certificate in Energy.

Human Dimensions of Environmental Change Graduate Certificate

The Department of Human Ecology coordinates an interdisciplinary graduate certificate on human dimensions of environmental change. The program is open to any student enrolled in a Rutgers University graduate program. The certificate program represents a collaboration among faculty from several graduate programs, and allows students to examine the political, cultural, economic, historical, and other human dimensions of environmental change while carrying out studies in an existing graduate program. The certificate is designed to help students access theoretical perspectives, skills, and/or other resources provided by various programs and departments at Rutgers while simultaneously creating spaces for interdisciplinary interaction.

The graduate-level certificate program real estate development and redevelopment, developed jointly by the Bloustein School and Rutgers Business School: Graduate Programs-Newark and New Brunswick's Center for Real Estate, focuses on the theories, methods, practical skills, and contextual knowledge needed to work at a high level within this industry. The innovative and interdisciplinary program integrates existing coursework offered in the Bloustein School's graduate programs in planning and public policy, Rutgers Business School Center for Real Estate, and the Rutgers Business School M.B.A. program.

The real estate industry is economically important and has unique characteristics that tie it firmly to specific places and their attributes. This is especially true when redeveloping existing sites. The urban planner's domains of land-use planning, transportation, housing policy, property tax regimes, and local politics set the context for the real estate industry as it carries out development and redevelopment. The business of real estate drives the development and redevelopment processes that create the need for urban planning, urban design, and land-use regulation. By combining the strengths of Bloustein's top-10 ranked urban planning graduate program with the RBS M.B.A. real estate concentration, this certificate offers students in both programs an unparalleled learning opportunity. This collaboration, these perspectives, and skills are the focus of this certificate program.

Transportation Management: Vulnerability, Risk, and Security Certificate
The graduate certificate in transportation vulnerability, risk, and security was developed by a coalition of faculty and staff from the Bloustein School, the School of Engineering, the School of Arts and Sciences, and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS). The 15-credit program is designed for Rutgers University-New Brunswick graduate students with an interest in a risk analysis approach to transportation policy. Participants in this program will develop expertise that can be applied through a multidisciplinary approach, providing them with skills that will apply to future work sites and enrich their and research in the field of transportation planning and management. This approach offers students a background in the disciplines of engineering, health, sociology, geography, environmental planning, and risk management. The research and training associated with the certificate will enable certified students to apply their classroom experience in a comprehensive approach to reducing risk exposures and develop efficient interdisciplinary networks in response to complex problems related to system vulnerabilities. The certificate has two required courses, the initial course in transit management and planning and a seminar, challenging the students to draw from all their certificate courses in the completion of their final project.

Transportation Studies Certificate
The Bloustein School, in partnership with the School of Engineering, offers a cross-disciplinary program leading to the graduate certificate in transportation studies. The certificate is open to matriculated graduate students in the two graduate programs at the Bloustein School (urban planning and policy development and public policy) and in the School of Engineering's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The certificate is offered with two concentrations: technology and design and policy and planning. The technology and design concentration focuses on analysis and design issues and is directed at students with an interest in transportation and traffic engineering and facility design. The policy and planning concentration focuses on the policy and planning process and is directed at students with these interests. In general, the student enrolls in one of the programs at the master's level and, upon graduating, receives a transportation studies certificate signifying completion of the program at the same time the student receives his or her master's degree. Under some circumstances, doctoral students may be admitted to the certificate program.

Geospatial Information Science Certificate 
A certificate program in geospatial information science is offered by a faculty drawn from the Bloustein School, the Department of Geography at the School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The certificate program provides an in-depth, interdisciplinary examination of the emerging discipline of geospatial information, focusing both on the development of theory and on the application of geographic information systems.

Historic Preservation Certificate
The graduate certificate in historic preservation is a cross-disciplinary graduate program administered by the Bloustein School and the Department of Art History at the School of Arts and Sciences. This certificate program is open to graduate students enrolled in and working toward completion of any of Rutgers graduate master's or doctoral programs.

Graduate Certificate in Public Policy
The graduate certificate in public policy is a cross-disciplinary graduate program administered by the programs in planning and public policy within the Bloustein School. This certificate program is only open to graduate students enrolled in and working toward completion of the master of city and regional planning (M.C.R.P.) program. There is a symmetrical urban planning certificate available to public policy graduate students.
