Forgiveness Policy

The purpose of this proposal is to establish a viable mechanism for facilitating the return of capable, mature, undergraduate students to the college after academic dismissal for poor performance, or simply dropping out during an earlier attempt at higher education in the college.

The spirit of this policy is to provide students who have been separated from college for dismissal, or dropping out during the middle of a semester, with a second opportunity for pursuing a baccalaureate degree from the college. The forgiveness aspect of the policy is intended to remove the impact of a poor semester average on the cumulative grade-point average. It is intended that this policy be applied to a student's academic record only one time.

There are five considerations in the proposed forgiveness policy:

1. The student must have been matriculated in the college for at least two successive semesters.

2. The student must have been in a nonregistered status for at least 10 successive semesters and have a cumulative grade-point average of below 2.00.

3. The student must petition the Committee on Scholastic Standing for permission to be readmitted to the college.

4. The Committee on Scholastic Standing will review the petition and remove, by way of E prefix, from the cumulative average all of the grades and degree credits from one semester of poor academic performance or a maximum of 12 credits from more than one semester.

5. Upon receiving permission to reenroll, the student will be required to achieve a semester average of at least 2.500 and to maintain a cumulative average consistent with that specified in the catalog for remaining in good academic standing.
